“With great sadness we have known the death of Kobe Bryant and four other people in Calabasas. The aircraft fell in a remote area near Las Virgenes at 10 this morning,” Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub said in a statement.
Bryant was traveling in his private helicopter when he rushed to the ground and was engulfed in flames.
Emergency personnel came to the scene of the incident and it was confirmed that there were no survivors, Los Angeles County Police said in a message on Twitter.
The former Los Angeles Lakers player regularly used his private Sikorsky S-76 helicopter to get around.
Bryant was married to Vanessa and had four daughters: Gianna, Natalia, Bianca and the newborn Capri. None of them were in the crashed helicopter.
Kobe is considered one of the best NBA players of all time, as he has been part of the star team 18 times during his 20-year career with the Lakers.
He was elected in the first round of the 1996 draft and won five NBA rings, two most valuable player (MVP) awards from the NBA finals and was the league’s MVP in 2008.
The Lakers withdrew Kobe’s two shirts, number 8 and 24. He is the only player in the history of the Angelian team that has received that honor.
He also won two gold medals with the USA team at the 2008 Beijing and London Olympic Games in 2012.
In his two decades as a player he became one of the great stars of the league and one of the most popular athletes.
After retiring, he quickly presented his own investment fund focused on the technology, media and data sectors.
Also, in 2018 he won the Oscar for best animated short film with “Dear Basketball”.
