Switzerland: A petition to welcome 200 refugee children – Switzerland

The announcement made by the Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter admitting refugee children from Greece, who have family in Switzerland, is not enough for three individuals. They ask that 200 unaccompanied minors be admitted.

The Federal Council should allow these children to come to Switzerland and to follow the asylum procedure, ask Katarina Socha, Jacqueline Schmid and Marco Piffaretti in a press release published on Monday. A humanitarian commitment from Switzerland is urgent, they underline in a petition launched on Saturday.

In 2019, almost twice as many refugees arrived on the Greek islands than in the previous year, underline the petitioners. The situation in Lesbos has worsened further with around 1,500 unaccompanied minor refugees living alone in the Moria camp: “the conditions there are inhuman.”

More radical interpretation

At the request of Greece, Switzerland agreed to take refugee minors. She offered help in Athens, said Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter during a meeting of European ministers in Zagreb, Croatia last Friday.

At the end of 2019, the Greek government requested support from several European countries – including Switzerland. The arrival of the first young refugees is not yet clear, as they still need to be examined.

The reception of refugees is precisely regulated by the Dublin agreements. The transfer of a minor can be carried out with a reduced bureaucratic burden, if he has family in the host country. Switzerland abides by these rules.

The three petitioners have a more radical interpretation of the Dublin agreements. According to them, Switzerland is obliged to accept children and young people with family links in Switzerland taking into account the precarious conditions of the Greek camps. (Ps / nxp)
