Die for a good cause?

In Germany there are still a number of obstacles to voluntary instrumentalisation of dying for a good cause.

In America, transplant planners hope to deal with suicide allowances more openly. They also sense an opportunity to establish the removal of organs during their lifetime. Is that a good example for Germany?

eThe lesson in How the Liberalization of Suicide Aid Transforms the Culture of Medicine can now be read in the renowned “New England Journal of Medicine”. There, Canadian doctors report thirty cases of successful organ harvesting after the donors themselves took a lethal poison or after it was administered by doctors.

The rapporteurs do not speak of acts of killing in an abstract way. Doctors prefer the artificial word MAID: medical assistance in dying. Whether as a suicide aid or active euthanasia, MAID has been decriminalized since 2016 due to a sentence from the highest court in Canada. The authors assume at least two thousand cases a year. Ian Ball and Robert Sibbald recognize this as an attractive resource for organ donation. It puts medically accelerated dying in a positive light and surrounds it with the claim of altruism.
