A little later, the videos are already circulating on social media. One shows how at least four men fight with a man on the ground – trying to bring him under control. A man in a suit and tie stands next to the brawl and holds a big knife in his hand. Then special forces rush in, urging civilians to leave. In a video you can see an officer dragging a last man down from the person lying on the ground – then the policeman lifts his gun and shoots.
What is not visible in the video and later explained by Neil Basu, the head of the anti-terrorist unit, the man wore a vest that looked like an explosive belt. He had previously injured several people with a knife near London Bridge, some of them seriously. The police talk about terror.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan later praised the "incomparable heroism" of the passers-by who had overpowered the Messer terrorist. He said, "These were really the best of us and they exemplify the courage and heroism of ordinary Londoners who run into danger and risk their own safety to save others." Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the saviors " the best that this country has to offer. "In the evening, the Guardian reported that at least one of the Messer terrorist victims died of his injuries, according to the BBC, there are even two.
