Dortmund bitter debut of Klinsmann and Bayern trips

Jurgen Klinsmann made his left foot as coach of Hertha Berlin when the club of the capital succumbed on Saturday 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Early goals by Jadon Sancho and Thorgan Hazard were enough for Dortmund to give his coach Lucien Favre a break. It was just the first victory of the team in four games in all competitions.

Bayern Munich lost at home 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen, the first setback under the direction of interim coach Hansi Flick.

Leon Bailey scored both Leverkusen's goals and thus break Flick's four-win streak in all competitions. The stumbling block prevented Bayern from reaching Leipzig at the top of the league.

The third defeat of the champion of the last seven seasons left them in fourth place, lagging three points behind Leipzig. They are also a point behind Borussia MOnchengladbach, which could be the leader if Sunday wins from home to Freiburg.

Klinsmann, the former coach of Germany, the United States and Bayern, was hired on Wednesday to replace the fired Ante Covic, but could not prevent a fifth straight loss in the league.

Klinsmann planted a line of three centrals, but defensive problems persisted when Dortmund scored at 15 and 17 minutes.

Hertha discounted the 34 through both Vladimir Darida. Dortmund had to play with 10 men for the last 45 minutes without Mats Hummels. The central was expelled by double warning near the rest.

Klinsmann's team seized possession in the second half before an opponent who was content to retreat and risked little.

Leipzig remained as provisional leader after winning 3-2 in his visit to Paderborn. The game seemed to be settled early with goals from Patrik Schick and Marcel Sabitzer before the four minutes.

Timo Werner increased to 26, but Streli Mamba and Klaus Gjasula discounted in the complement to give emotion to the last minutes.

Also on Saturday, Cologne tied 1-1 at home with Augsburg and Fortuna Dusseldorf equalized 1-1 at his visit to Hoffenheim.
