This over-powered drone has reached 400 km / h


To reach a speed of more than 400 km / h with a drone, a Texas company replaced the rotors with four microreactors fed with diesel. The aircraft can cruise for 15 minutes.

For a drone quadrotors, move at speeds exceeding 150 km / h is reserved for some models. In the material, the RacerX was able to sneak up to a record 289 km / h during a very short flight. Going beyond is almost impossible, especially sinceautonomy is ridiculously reduced. Because, like any helicopter, the speed of the rotor drones is limited by a well-known phenomenon of rotating wings. The blade that turns forward will accumulate its speed to that of theaircraft. For the blade that is in the back, it's the opposite. And the faster the camera goes and the less bearing It is for this reason that these sails rarely exceed 300 km / h. It is possible to improve the lift with counter-rotating propellers, but it is still too much energy for a drone.

The solution ? Replace the rotors with four reaction microturbines powered by Diesel. This is the type of drone developed by FusionFlight. Based in Dallas, Texas (USA), she designed and experimented with a drone concept with the JetQuad AB5. This one accumulates two records: that of the drone to reaction the smallest and fastest in the world with a top speed of 402 km / h. As another record, the AB5 can evolve in theory beyond 9,144 meters in height. This is not a microdrone. The device measures 120 centimeters in length and width for 60 centimeters in height.

Nearly 500 km / h for the standard model

At the level of consumption, the drone is glutton. A full 19 liters allows him to do 30 minutes of hovering or 15 minutes cruising.

But the advantage of the JetQuad AB5 is that unlike an electric drone of this weight / size, the aircraft can carry a maximum payload of 18 kg. A feat, knowing that the drone itself weighs 23 kg and must be added about 18 kg of fuel.

For now the device only exists as a prototype, but it could be marketed in a little over a year. The standard version of the drone should reach a top speed of 483 km / h. The firm plans to fly it even faster, using post-combustion systems. Its tariff will obviously not be a leisure dronesince it will be sold between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000.
