Activision Blizzard: Upswing thanks to WoW Classic

Activision Blizzard made $ 1.28 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2019. That is below the figures from the same quarter of the previous year, but above expectations. The orderly performance of the game publishers is partly due to World of Warcraft Classic.

The Classic version of World of Warcraft Blizzard has the quarterly report, the highest quarterly subscriber increase in the history of online role-playing brought. WoW Classic is a game version of the MMO designed to provide long-time fans with a similar gaming experience to the early version of World of Warcraft. Activision Blizzard is also pleased with Call of Duty Black Ops 4, which has more players compared to its predecessor Call of Duty World War II and sells more in-game items.

The third quarter ended September 30, which means that the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and Call of Duty Mobile will not occur during the quarter. Especially these two games should give Activision Blizzard a huge boost. The launch of Call of Duty Mobile was a huge success – no other game was downloaded so often in such a short time. Activision Blizzard expects sales of $ 1.8 billion in the fourth quarter.

Q4's quarterly figures will also reveal whether boycott calls within the Blizzard community actually had an effect: after the controversial ban on Hong Kong's Hearthstone professional "blitzchung", there had been calls in forums and on platforms like Reddit to boycott the blizzard games. At the Blizzcon in-house show, users again protested Blizzard's decision.

In any case, Blizzard is not responsible for the largest share of Activision Blizzard's revenue: Activision Blizzard's King mobile (Candy Crush) has by far the most users. In the second quarter of 2019 King was responsible for the lion's share of sales.
