MUNICH (Dow Jones) – The Ifo world economic climate continued to deteriorate in the fourth quarter of 2019. The indicator fell from minus 10.1 to minus 18.8 points. Both the assessment and the expectations dropped significantly. "The global economy continues to cool," said the Ifo Institute.
The economic climate worsened in almost all regions. In the emerging markets, the situation was particularly unfavorable. In the advanced economies, the forecasts for the coming months deteriorated in particular. In emerging markets, the downside comes mainly from Asia, in advanced economies, especially from the US.
The experts surveyed expect significantly weaker world trade growth, weaker private consumption and lower investment activity. Compared to the spring, the shares of the experts, who rate the overall economic demand as well as the innovation activity as insufficient, increased noticeably.
Every quarter, the Ifo Institute brings together experts from a wide range of countries on the development of the economy and other economic data in their respective observation areas. 1,230 experts from 117 countries took part in the October survey.
