An unknown bidder from Hong Kong paid 120,000 euros for a truffle at an auction in Italy on Sunday. The tuber weighed one kilo, reported Italian media. The auction of the truffle in Alba in Piedmont is considered the most exclusive of its kind. Gourmets from around the world come by video.
The price of these extra-large truffles does not match the market price of white truffles, which costs around 375 euros per 100 grams in Italy. The truffle auction in Alba takes place annually for 88 years. The auction serves charity purposes. In total, truffles were auctioned on Sunday for a value of 420,000 euros.
500 million euros per year for truffles
White truffles are collected in the truffle region of Alba from 21st September to 31st January. In Italy, there are about 200,000 truffle collectors. They generate a turnover of 500 million euros per year.
