F1 wants the "romanticism" of different cars in 2021

Before the presentation of the 2021 rules of F1, some teams were concerned that the governing body was restricting too many areas of development and critics suggested that it risked falling into equal cars and a "GP1" style formula.

However, when they introduced the new technical standards for the first time, the FIA He pointed out seven key areas of the car that, in his opinion, give designers space to pursue different forms.

Part of the process of defining the rules included tests with more occasional experts and observers on the forms of current cars to see if they could be identified without their respective decorations, and the FIA head of technical affairs, Nikolas Tombazis, said to Motorsport.com that the attempt to make the differentiation between cars easier is valid.

"If you are looking for an amateur who is not an expert and you take away the decorations to the cars, you will probably have difficulties to differentiate the cars and say which one is which," said Tombazis. "Even today, cars look less different than people would say. From a romantic point of view, it would be good if they looked different."

"Like in the old days, when you had a car with six wheels, others with ground effect, others with radiators in the front or whatever."

To underscore this point, the FIA presented three different versions of designs that would be legal under the new standards, illustrating the scope of freedom with important elements such as sidepods and front and rear wing designs.

"When we showed these different options it was to illustrate that you can still have some quite different forms between cars, which are not irrational forms, that could still lead to a little differentiation," said Tombazis. "Now, what exactly will be the best solution, we don't know yet."

Even after the publication of technical standards, the former F1 technical director and Motorsport.com expert, Gary AndersonHe was critical and described them as "painted with numbers."

He added that "it is very prescriptive and will definitely reduce the possibility of individual ideas."

However, Tombazis insists that the FIA has not only softened the prescription of the rules from the moment it received many criticisms, but has also allowed more freedom in areas with greater aesthetic significance.

Also read:

"The truth is that part of the reason cars have converged is A] regulation and B] the fact that people know what they are doing much more now than in the past," said Tombazis. "They have simulations for almost everything. They can predict performance. They study each other's solutions and select the best. There is a natural convergence in each set of regulations and this will not be an exception."

"That said, until about a month and a half ago, we were very criticized for the amount of prescription of the standards. And we received a lot of information from the teams about the areas that they considered could be freer. We had our own opinions. We combined our points. of view and the contributions of the teams and we made some simulations, and we selected some areas that could be more free and visually more differentiating and interesting from the point of view of development.

"We release some of these areas a little more."
