"The Valencian Community has been pioneer in financing measurement devices since 2017 continuous glucose for patients with diabetes, "said the Minister.
Since 2018, its department also finances the glucose measurement devices without punctures (flash) to avoid that all children under 4 to 18 years with type 1 diabetes have to be punctured eight times a day to know their blood glucose and improve their quality of life .
According to Barcelo, "thanks to this experience, we have collaborated with the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare and it should be remembered that, the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (SNS) approved funding at the state level and with the same criteria as in the Community of glucose flash devices. "
In addition, funding has also been expanded, prioritizing access to this measure, for people with cognitive functional diversity, visual impairment, pregnant or planning women, and people with frequent hypoglycemia.
Thus, in 2019, in addition to the 1,235 minors who have benefited from this technology, the financing of the glucose flash monitor has also been extended for adults, as it has reached 1,509 people.
To date, an investment of 1,913,284 euros has been made in these devices.
As agreed by the SNS Interterritorial Council, in a first phase, the financing of glucose flash devices for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus is being provided to the priority groups (cognitive functional diversity, visual impairment, pregnant women or pregnant women) and people with frequent hypoglycemia).
This supposes 50% of this population in the Valencian Community; and later it will be extended to the rest of patients with this disease.
The Ministry calculates that there are 18,000 people in the Valencian Community with type 1 diabetes mellitus (chronic disorder in which the pancreas produces very little insulin or does not produce it directly).
In the Valencian Community there is a total of 407,794 people with diabetes mellitus (type 1 and 2): 44,676 in Castello, 220,459 in Valencia and 142,630 in Alicante.
The glucose flash monitor is prescribed accompanied by a specific diabetes education program aimed at patients and families to offer them training in decision making.
