Again at a school in the US, people were shot and injured by gunfire. This time it hit the town of Santa Clarita north of Los Angeles. The alleged shooter is in custody.

A gunman opened fire at a school in Santa Clarita, California, and shot two students. The dead were a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old, as the police in Santa Clarita north of Los Angeles announced. A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old schoolgirl and a 14-year-old pupil of Saugus High School were injured.

The alleged shooter, who had turned 16 on Thursday and also visited the Saugus High School, then shot himself with the last cartridge in his gun in the head. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Sagittarius is said to have used semi-automatic pistol

Captain Kent Wegener, from the Los Angeles District Sheriff's Office, said the gunman had used a semi-automatic pistol that had run out of cartridges after the bloody murder. The police received a first emergency call at 7.38 am (local time / 16.38 pm CET). Two minutes later, officials were at the school. There they found six wounded with gunshot wounds, all of whom were students at the Saugus High School.

Later, it turned out that among the six injured was the alleged perpetrator, said Wegener. Two of the injured victims died later, according to the police in the hospital. Paul Delacourt of the Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI said there are currently no indications of a motive or ideology behind the crime.

Again and again gun violence in the US

In the United States, it happens again and again that in schools, shopping malls or in other public places people are killed by shots. For example, in February 2018, at a high school in Parkland, Florida, a 19-year-old shot and killed 14 teenagers and three adults. The shooter was arrested. Surviving students had launched after the bloodbath a protest against gun violence and stricter gun laws in the US, which became a nationwide movement.

In El Paso, Texas, a shooter is currently being charged with murdering 22 people. If convicted, the 21-year-old person faces the death penalty. The Texan is accused of opening fire in a Walmart branch in El Paso, Texas on the Mexican border in early August, killing 22 people. Investigators treat the bloody deed as domestic terrorism. They assume that the gunman wanted to kill Mexicans in his attack. A few hours after the massacre, another gunman set up a bloodbath in Dayton, Ohio.

Efforts to tighten gun laws have been going nowhere for years – especially as US President Donald Trump's Republicans are against it. The powerful weapons lobby organization NRA is fighting every attempt to regulate firearms ownership. Trump also opposes restricting the right to possess firearms, which is enshrined in the US Constitution.
