(Toronto) Twenty people demonstrated peacefully in front of Rogers headquarters Wednesday to protest Don Cherry's dismissal.
Some of the commentator's supporters stood silently, Canadian flag in hand, on the sidewalk, while others had placards. On one of them was written: "Rogers fires Don, we fired Rogers."
There were as many journalists as there were protesters.
The event was organized in response to Sportsnet's dismissal of Cherry as a result of what he said during his segment Coach's Corner during the first intermission of Hockey Night in Canada, last Saturday. Many understood that Cherry had criticized immigrants for not wearing poppies. Cherry said he was not targeting immigrants.
Some motorists honked in support of the event.
