Berlin / Grunheide. One day after Tesla's decision to build a new automobile factory in Grunheide, southeast of Berlin, the German capital is confident in what has lured the US electric car maker into the region.
"Our investments in science and research give Berlin a new golden age. This shows Tesla's great decision to choose the metropolitan region of Berlin as her European development and production base, "said Berlin's Mayor Michael Muller (SPD) on Wednesday.
The settlement of Tesla is further proof of the enormous attractiveness of the innovation location. Berlin has become a magnet for big companies with its research and science scene, said a ecstatic head of government.

The reason for Muller's jubilee is a statement by Tesla boss Elon Musk himself. Musk had announced on Tuesday completely surprising, the new, big plans of his group in the metropolitan region of Berlin-Brandenburg.
Construction of cars, battery cells and powertrains
Tesla wants to build a giga factory in the vicinity of the capital airport BER, which is under construction. There will be built next to battery cells and powertrains and electric cars. Initially, it is planned to manufacture the compact SUV Model Y from the end of 2021 onwards.
A department for research, development and apparently also for design of the future Tesla products is to be settled in Berlin. Musk said on the short message service Twitter, a center should be located in the German capital. The location is still unclear, according to the administration.

The first details for the planned Giga factory followed on Wednesday: Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, JOrg Steinbach (SPD), said the start of construction of the factory is already planned for the first quarter of 2020. The production start should be 2021. In the first stage, the factory should bring more than 3000 jobs. In the Berlin economic administration even of 6000 jobs is mentioned. In a second expansion stage, another 4,000 jobs could follow.
According to Brandenburg's Minister of Economics Steinbach, the investments are expected to amount to several billion euros. The factory on an industrial area in Grunheide near the highway 10 is to cover 300 hectares. The model for the work is likely to be the Giga factory in Shanghai.
There, 150,000 electric vehicles are to be produced annually in the first stage of development. The plant was built in record time of less than a year and is expected to start production soon.
Comment: Tesla is coming – Berlin's Senate has to position itself per car
Tesla surprised everyone again. For months, locations throughout Europe had been promoting the location of production. That the electric car maker decided now for Brandenburg and Berlin may be considered a surprise.
Persons familiar with the negotiations said that Tesla had chosen Brandenburg as the location for the first giga factory on European soil precisely because of its proximity to the metropolis of millions. Here, so the automaker surmises, it will most likely be possible to find the required specialists.
Competition for skilled workers increases through the settlement
But the competition for clever minds – be they craftsmen, skilled workers or software developers – has also picked up speed in the German capital. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) assumes that Berlin-based companies already lack 141,000 specialists. Ascending trend.
In the automotive sector, around 200 automotive suppliers are currently recruiting for work in the capital region. Added to this are production sites such as the BMW plant in Spandau, the Mercedes engine plant in Marienfelde or the Rolls-Royce plant in Dahlewitz (Teltow-Flaming). However, the competition for highly qualified experts and engineers is likely to gain further momentum as a result of the Tesla settlement.
The electric car builder sets in advertising for talent especially on its own attractiveness. Tesla is still considered hip among young people. But the university and university landscape in Berlin also played a role in the planned settlement. According to figures from the location marketing agency Berlin Partner, about 22,000 students are currently enrolled in the relevant industrial subjects. Around 192,000 students are currently immature at all Berlin universities.
TU President sees new opportunities for research
Christian Thomsen, President of the Technical University of Berlin, expressed his confidence on Wednesday to be able to cover the additional demand for skilled labor that Tesla is creating. "The metropolitan region of Berlin has a very high density of university and academic institutions. This puts us in a position not only to qualify numerous graduates for the labor market, but at the same time to advance major social issues with our research, "said Thomsen.
Politicians and business associations spoke on Wednesday of a good sign for Berlin and Brandenburg, but called for even greater cooperation between the two federal states. IHK President Beatrice Kramm called the Tesla settlement a "great news for the capital region". And: "The settlement of production and development underlines that Berlin-Brandenburg radiates high entrepreneurial and scientific competence, especially in the area of mobility," she said.
For the development center planned in Berlin, Tesla now needs the support of the Senate, said Kramm. "This project clearly shows the importance of effective joint metropolitan management through Berlin and Brandenburg. For international companies in particular, Berlin and the surrounding area form an integrated economic area in which they rightly expect efficient and coordinated administrative procedures, "the IHK President continued.
UVB boss: "Like early Christmas"
Christian Amsinck, CEO of UVB, said the news of the Tesla settlement was like an "early Christmas". And: "Brandenburg and Berlin can score points as a dynamic metropolitan region, as an industrial as well as a science and high-tech location. Brandenburg and Berlin must now create the necessary conditions for Tesla's investment to be swiftly implemented, "said Amsinck.
Stefan Franzke, head of the location marketing agency Berlin Partner, sees the American Group's decision to build in the capital region as a spectacular example of Berlin's international appeal. "Berlin is and remains the innovation center for the mobility of the future. The decision also shows that economic development does not end at the state border: Brandenburg has the land, Berlin has the talents. We can all look forward to this shared success, "said Franzke.
