Our number 1, Alexander "Sascha" Zverev (22), is not included. Again. As in the knockout duels 2016 against Poland and 2017 in Portugal.
His reason this time: The new tournament mode with 18 nations playing the winner in a week would have "killed" the Myth Davis Cup. Nobody in the world could convince him to play in Madrid. Instead, he would rather make a holiday after the long season with just a tournament victory and regenerate, he announced at the beginning of the year.
But there can be no talk of a break now. While superstars such as Rafael Nadal (33 / Spain), Novak Djokovic (32 / Serbia), Nick Kyrgios (24 / Australia) or Gael Monfils (33 / France) neither compete for world ranking points nor prize money for their country, Zverev prefers to join Wimbledon King Roger Federer (38) through South America. Takes millions in entry fees for four show matches in Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador.
For Zverev it says: game, set, coal!
He sets personal priorities, instead of winning the first Davis Cup title since 1993, and leaves tennis Germany in the lurch – again!
