Road traffic: Increase in trucks on Swiss roads – Switzerland

Road freight transport inside Switzerland reached a record level last year. They represented 10.7 billion tonne-kilometers, an increase of 4.7% compared to 2017.

This is the largest increase recorded in 20 years, said Tuesday the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). In question, the positive cyclical evolution of Switzerland. In 2018, gross domestic product grew by 2.8% year-on-year, a growth well above that of the last ten years.

Total road and rail transportation totaled 27.9 billion tonne-kilometers, up 2.1% from 2017. Truck transportation gained 2.5 % and those by train 1.4%.

The road accounts for 63% of all goods transport. With 37%, the share of the rail is however high in international comparison, remarks the OFS. It averages 18% in the 28 EU countries.

Still, the two modes of transport are complementary. The distribution of goods in the regions can often only be done by road. The rail, meanwhile, is more advantageous over long distances.

Average distances are generally much larger in rail freight than on road. Last year, transport on Swiss railways covered an average of 171 kilometers, compared with 49 kilometers for road transport. (Ps / nxp)
