Three goals conceded and a first defeat: the French Espoirs experienced a nightmarish night on Tuesday in Neuchatel (3-1), where they gave the Swiss the head of Group 2 qualifiers at Euro 2021.
Already unreliable, despite the victories, against Slovakia (5-3) and Georgia (3-2), the defense of the Blueberries was again guilty of largesse against the young Swiss, now only leaders of the group with four wins in as many games. With this loss, its first in the playoffs, France remains blocked at nine points, three units behind Switzerland. The Blueberries will play in the playoffs only in March, during a trip to Liechtenstein and the reception of Switzerland.
Eleventh goal in six selections for Edouard
Sylvain Ripoll had to face for this meeting a number of absences: Matteo Guendouzi, drafted at the last minute by Didier Deschamps with the A, but also Houssem Aouar, Boubakary Soumare, Jonathan Ikone or Eduardo Camavinga, wounded. The French had yet opened the score by the inevitable Odsonne Edouard, author on penalty (18th minute) of his 11e goal in six selections with the Espoirs. The Celtic player Glasgow, who had already given the victory to France on Friday penalty against Georgia, deceived the Swiss goalkeeper of a panenka.
But the Swiss, not very dangerous at the beginning of the match, woke up at the end of the first period and then clearly gained the upper hand. They first equalized by Jeremy Guillemenot (43 '), who deflected a free kick shot in the area twice.
Early second half upside down
This is the same Guillemenot who, a few minutes later (46 ') and while Alban Lafont faced him, gave the ball to Andi Zeqiri alone, who then had only to push it to the bottom of the nets to give the advantage to Switzerland 2-1 at halftime.
Taking advantage of a huge job by Jordan Lotomba, who eliminated four defenders before centering, Zeqiri then doubled the lead.e minute to offer the break to his team.
The French have not been able to react and have ample opportunities to come back to the score.
As a reminder, only the first of each of the nine groups as well as the best ninth will qualify for Euro 2021, which will be played in Hungary and Slovenia. Four other nations will qualify by roadblocks.
