The French emanation of the United Nations agency for gender equality asks France to recognize the term "feminicide" in the Penal Code.
The association UN Women France called Thursday to "A general mobilization" against feminicides, notably by launching a campaign to make this term recognized in French law and thus better "Protect the victims".
"If the society becomes aware of the extent of this phenomenon, it is clear that the victims were insufficiently protected by a legal arsenal deemed ineffective", said in a statement the French emanation of the UN agency for gender equality.
121 feminicides in 2018
She therefore asks "Specific recognition of feminicide in French criminal law"According to a count and a case-by-case study conducted by AFP, at least 116 women have been killed by their spouse or former spouse since 1st January. By 2018, 121 women had lost their lives in the same circumstances, according to the Interior Ministry.
" Each. e of us may know a woman threatened in her surroundings. It is inhuman that in our time, women are risking their lives because they are women. "said Celine Mas, President of UN Women France. According to her, "Having femicide recognized in the law is an absolutely fundamental step in the quest for justice".
The #TheFeminicideInTheLoi campaign is launched in partnership with a group of associations, including the International Council of French Women, the Women's Mediterranean Forum, the National Solidarity Women's Federation, and the Women's Foundation. It will begin on 25 November on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Recognized in 1992 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the word feminicide is increasingly used in France to describe the killing of women by their spouses or former spouses. It is also a matter of debate, particularly between feminist associations, which seek its criminal recognition, and jurists who consider it unnecessary, since killing a spouse is already an aggravating circumstance and liable to life imprisonment.
