Nyck de Vries has shown on Friday that he can also participate in the Formula E for the first places. The Formula 2 champion qualified third for the E-Prix of Diriyah.
This weekend, the Riyadh Street Circuit in Saudi Arabia is starting the new season of Formula E, the world championship for electric cars. A race will be held both Friday and Saturday.
De Vries drives the new Formula E team from Mercedes, together with the former Belgian Formula 1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne. The 24-year-old Frisian set the second fastest time in the regular qualifying, Vandoorne was good for the third fastest time.
The six fastest drivers then competed in the super pole to the first starting place. Robin Frijns, the Limburg driver of Envision Virgin Racing, finished twelfth and was not allowed to advance to the final round.
In the super pole De Vries clocked the third time (1.14.919), just behind Vandoorne (1.14.829). The British Alexander Sims of BMW took pole position with 1.14.563.
Nine drivers with Formula 1 history in Formula E
In addition to Vandoorne, this year there are eight Formula One drivers with Formula 1 history with Felipe Massa, Brendon Hartley, Jean-Éric Vergne, Pascal Wehrlein, Sebastien Buemi, Jerôme d'Ambrosio, Lucas di Grassi and Andre Lotterer.
The E-Prix of Dirayah starts on Friday at 12.45 pm.
