A first woman in 167 years

After 167 years of history, Promutuel Insurance frees in the yard of SSQ Insurance to find the first woman to head its organization.

Over the past few days, Promutuel's Board of Directors has endorsed Genevieve Fortier's candidacy as Chief Executive Officer. She will begin her new duties on December 16th.

Mme Fortier will succeed Normand Morin, who had been acting since April after Sylvain Fauchon left.

The holder of a bachelor's and master's degree in industrial relations from Universite Laval recently held the position of Senior Vice President Sales and Distribution at SSQ Assurance.

"She was not chosen because she is a woman. It's because she's competent and inspiring, "says Yvan Rose, Chairman of the Board.

The insurer did business with a recruitment agency to find his new head of management.

"One of the important things is that she is not an actuary, as is the case in the industry for this position. We already have in-house actuaries, we needed a leader, "says Rose.

Not a first

This is not the first time that a woman finds herself at the head of a company or an insurance division in Quebec.

In 2008, Sylvie Paquette was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Desjardins General Insurance Group. Monique Leroux was then President and Chief Executive Officer of the cooperative.

Promutuel now has 1925 employees. The head office is located in the Lebourgneuf district.
